At this time, we are focusing our CLINE research in the NC-TN-GA tri-state area; but have included SC and KY info to help with migrations before the Civil War.  We have reviewed the actual images at ancestry.com for each of our listings.  Although we are very familiar with old handwriting, there will most always be something that cannot be read.  We have noted these and included which ways they could be deciphered.

Soundex Search Tip:  Searching on CLINE will not include those that spell it with a "K" such as KLINE.  Searches must be performed both ways to include spelling variations of CLINE and KLINE.

1790 US Federal Census

What do the numbers mean?  Reading numeral positions left to right, they are:
  • 1 - free white males 16 & older including heads of households  [b. before 1775]
  • 2 - free while males under 16  [b. 1775-1790]
  • 3 - free white females including head of household
  • 4 - all other free persons 1
  • 5 - slaves
