Birth Records

  Order Birth Records Online!

It's easy, fast, and secure.....

Birth Records are not available in GA, NC and TN to just anyone.  Be sure to read each state's requirements before trying to order a birth record.  Adoption records are closed in all 3 states to the general public.

Unless a person is deceased, posting full day-month-year birth information on the internet or even sharing that information in emails or gedcoms can lead to possible identity theft.  SMARC asks all genealogy researchers and webspinners to pay close attention to what information they are sharing about living individuals.  Please share only the birth year.  Please also read:  Avoiding the Theft of Your Identity.

Before uploading your gedcoms to sites on the internet, be sure they have privacy filtering software embedded in their programs and choose the advanced upload methods that usually provide more control over eliminating identifying information about living persons.  Also learn how to key death information in your genealogy software program so that these embedded filtering programs will read your death information correctly and not just assume that the absence of death dates means that person is still living and strip all the information about deceased folks.

Creating web pages about deceased persons showing only birth information is viewed as irresponsible by SMARC.  We have seen a few county coordinators with the USGenWeb Project trying to do this in states that have 'closed' birth records.  It's giving a grossly wrong impression to visitors viewing those pages.  It appears that these people are still alive and that birth records are 'open' in those states.

Generally speaking, anyone born before 1901 is now more than likely deceased.  Anyone born 1901-1930 on census schedules is possibly still living.

  2. A person seeking information for a legal determination of personal or property rights or
  3. An authorized agent, attorney, or legal representative of a person described in (1) or (2) above

NOTE: Proof of identity and proof of eligibility are required.

TN State Vital Records Office - what records are available, where they are located, to whom copies are given, fees, and how to order on-line.  Birth records are kept for 100 years, then sent to the
TN State Library and Archives "TSLA".

Some birth records were begun in TN in 1908.  In 1913, the new law for state-wide records was passed to begin Jan 1914, so no records were kept for 1913.

TSLA has partial 'delayed' birth records for persons born 1869-1899.  Email TSLA and they will check their index for a specific name.  Include name of child, date of birth or approximate date of birth, county of birth (if known) and names of parents (if known).

For birth records after 1912 or for "delayed" birth certificates filed for persons born after 1899, contact the TN State Vital Records Office.

Certified copies of the original records are available only to the person named on the record and to certain family members or legal representatives.
