1898-1914 Dawes Commission Index, 1898-1914 - Commonly called the Commission to the Five Civilized Tribes, the Dawes Commission was appointed by President Grover Cleveland in 1893. In return for abolishing their tribal governments and recognizing state and federal laws, tribe members of the Five Civilized Tribes - the Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw and Seminole - were given a share of common property. This database indexes the original applications for tribal enrollments under the act of June 28, 1898. It also indexes documents such as birth and death affidavits, marriage licenses, and decisions and orders of the Commission.

1880 "Free" searchable, transcribed database at LDS covering all of USA. Each household is linked to original images at ancestry.com which can be viewed if you have their census subscription.  Caution!!  There are many errors in these transcriptions by LDS.  Always consult the original image.  Also be sure to try every possible spelling of surnames as well as given names when searching.  Example:  for Bowers, look also at Powers and Sowers and Towers as B-P-S-T often look similar in old handwriting and are easily mis-transcribed.  Look at our Tips section for a link to instructions on how to decipher old handwriting for other clues about similar letters.

1864 1864 Census for Re-Organizing the Georgia Militia
...is a statewide census of all white males between the ages of 16 and 60 who were not at the time in the service of the Confederate States of America. Based on a law passed by the Georgia Legislature in December 1863 to provide for the protection of women, children, and invalids living at home, it is a list of some 42,000 men--many of them exempt from service--who were able to serve in local militia companies and perform such home front duties as
might be required of them.  Each one of the 42,000 persons enrolled was listed by his full name, age, occupation, place of birth, and reason (if any) for his exemption from service.
