- Apr 23- Birthday of Hepsey A. McKinney, 95. She remembered mountaineers
trading beeswax, furs, venison, tallow, and dried herbs such as ginseng, lady
slipper, golden seal, and may apple with her husband for merchandise. They
wagoned to Atlanta from Chestnut Gap taking three days one way. After finishing
trading, they bought a years supplies, and deposited any money with John Silvey
& Co. She named a son after Mr. Silvey. A shoemaker would come to her home
each fall and spend about two weeks making footwear for the family. Once they
had six large bears and a cub, the latter trained to eat chestnuts from her
hand. When the Yankees came in 1864, they burned their corn mill and all their
belongings. They refugeed to Tennessee. Col. McKinney used to own the famous
Horse Shoe Bend tract in Tenn. With J. B. Glover he helped survey and build the
old Marietta & North Georgia Railroad.
