Going Cemetery Hunting?
Here's a suggested list of items you'll need:

  • Directions to the Cemetery or its GPS coordinates

  • Area map

  • Cell phone and/or vehicle with OnStar, for emergencies

  • Water and/or sports re-hydrating drinks

  • Sunglasses and umbrella

  • Sunscreen

  • insect repellant

  • Digital Camera with extra memory sticks; or other type of camera with plenty of film

  • Chalk and tin foil

  • Wisk broom

  • Hand rake & hand garden shovel

  • Small clippers for trimming around flat, sunken markers

  • Paper towels & toilet paper

  • hand or baby wipes

  • trash bag

  • if allergic to insect stings, your medication

  • washcloth and distilled vinegar for immediate, temporary treatment of ant bites

  • first-aid kit

  • snake-bite kit

  • driving directions to the nearest hospital...just in case

Be sure to wear suitable clothing including closed-toe shoes and high-top socks.  Watch out for snakes and take great care when turning over logs or stones.

If venturing into the woods, wear bright orange or red caps or shirts and carry a GPS directional finder.  Don't go alone.  It is suggested that venturing to out-of-the-way cemeteries in our tri-state area be done in the fall/winter after the leaves have fallen and after the first frost for several reasons.  It's easier to see where you are going, less likely to run into snakes, and easier navigation over back roads that cross streams. You may also need a sickle or machete for cutting away overgrown brush along the access trails to the really old, abandoned grave sites.
