Veteran Pensions

Pensions were applied for by veterans and their widows and orphaned children based on their service in a particular war.  Qualifications to receive a pension may be different for each war.  Copies of these military records are a valuable resource to genealogists because of the wealth of information contained in them.  The applications were written at that point in time by family members who usually included specific information and they were attested to by witnesses who knew the applicant for a long time, often other family members.

There are numerous individual pension applications transcribed and on-line.  We will not try to point to each individual transcribed application; but instead provide information about pensions and where to find them on the internet.  We suggest you use Google to locate pension appliations by specific surnames.

Pensions in General

The USGenWeb Archives - Pensions Project
covers all wars, has info about ordering records from NARA

Several years ago, RootsWeb took over the popular GenConnect data posting boards which had a separate board for pension transcriptions for each county and surname.  They were then much easier to find and link to.  Now, all 6 of the GenConnect data boards are stored within one single 'message board' for each county and surname mixed in with queries.  GenConnect no longer exists.  You can view posts by type [obits, pensions, wills, etc.] once you finally arrive at a county message board.  Start your search for our tri-state area at the following link, then choose state, then county or historical county:
