Schools

School records reflect which county a student was living at the time they were in attendance.  Certain census records show if a child attended school within the previous 12 months of that particular census.

Most women born before 1840 did not attend school and could not read and write.  Census records will show if a person was over 21 and still could not read or write.  It wasn't until about 1850 that schools were attended by the majority of children residing in our mountain tri-state area.  Often churches served as school houses in rural areas.

Local Libraries may have copies of yearbooks of area high schools back to the 1950's and perhaps earlier.  There will usually be information about the historical county schools in county heritage books.
